Easter time catch up!!

April 8, 2010
Well after a lovely break from work, enjoying the wet windy north its back to work...first stop...updating the blog...i've promised myself at least every other day so we'll see how that goes!!

Anyway heres a mini catch up of what i've been up to...

Today I spent the day up to my elbows in sheep dirt...cleaning a fleece in my bath...after 4 washes its clean(ish) so is hung on the washing line to dry...so i'm waiting to see how my washing skills hold up!!

Neighbourhoodies...

March 5, 2010
I have also been working on a side project with LCF and Otto Von Busch to create a hoody that symbolises where we live, the culture surrounding us and the history behind it...so Hackney got thoroughly photographed and my final idea is shown below...hopefully a picture of me wearing it will follow shortly although there has been a little delay on the printing of the design!!

London Fashion Week...

March 5, 2010
I helped the Environmental Justice Foundation (check out their website its amazing!) at London Fashion Week...selling t-shirts and giving people a little information about the charity and what they are trying to achieve, it was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it!!

Christopher Raeburn displayed some of his lovely work hung beautifully from the ceiling, it was part of his new collection featuring fabrics that used to be old military parachutes...they looked beautiful...

On Tuesday and Wednesday the Fashioning an Ethical Industry team held their annual conference at Rich Mix...it was a brilliant two days with amazing speakers, amazing workshops and a lovely lunch!!

Now the time has come to bury myself in more knitting and hopefully have a finished garment by the end of Sunday...wish me luck!!

Busy Busy...

March 5, 2010
Well time seems to have escaped me yet again...and my updates seem to be getting further and further apart...oops!!

Well the weeks seem to have merged into one long day with so much going on...here goes with the updates (happy reading mum heehee!)

My latest project 'sustainable solutions' has evolved into a knitted/sculptured/adjustable piece which can be worn in many different ways, centred around the idea that people could have hidden colour and textures on the inside of their clothing and express themselves with as much or as little colour as possible whenever the y like...updates on a new page will follow as soon as i've photographed the finished piece properly (and finished the piece!!)

But heres how its going so far...

What do I keep in my pockets?...

February 21, 2010
I apparently keep a lot of rubbish in my pockets...I think my pockets are more like boys pockets, as i'm not a fan of the handbag everything just gets shoved in the most convenient pocket...resulting in weeks of old receipts, ticket stubs, tissues and various small change arriving on my bed in a big pile when I eventually get around to emptying my now bulging pockets!!...

I am working on how to display this mess in a creative...yet organised way...wish me luck!!

Samples...

February 16, 2010
I have been focusing on my new Sustainable Solutions project, encompassing the ideas of 'everlasting' and what that means in the fashion world...I have begun to experiment with pockets, people have useful pockets, aesthetically pleasing pockets, comfort pockets. What do people keep in their pockets? and why?...through hand knitting I have looked into size, structure, texture and colour...

Waste not...

GO GREEN WEEK...

February 16, 2010
It was Go Green week at UAL last week and to celebrate and bring more environmental awareness to the lovely students across London we held a variety of events...

Monday was The Green Feast with a delightful array of green foods on offer...think cucumber sandwiches and kiwi fruits heehee...and slightly toxic looking green marshmallows...I loved the idea but thought more emphasis could have been put on sourcing ACTUAL green food..so fairtrade/organic?!

Tuesday Stitch and Bitch London held a customisation workshop and a knit and natter!

On thursday FATE held a SwapShop at The Hub, it was a great success and has lots of fun customising old clothes and swapping for new ones!

Friday was a great night for Fashion and the Environment...we held a special night with lovely speakers from EJF, Ethical Fashion Forum and People Tree and also showed a short film we had made (with amazing editing done by Saida/Julia.Una/Ruby!) focussing on the issues involved in fashion that concern us the most! A fun night was had by all!!

At the moment I am swamped by work but promise to post up my finished products when done...

ABOUT ME

Zoe Grace Fletcher Currently undertaking a PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University within the MIRIAD post-graduate department, I am beginning a practice based academic journey into British wool fibres and new technologies within knitwear design. Graduating with Distinction from a Masters in Fashion and the Environment at London College of Fashion, specialising in hand-knitting and the British Wool Industry, I have worked on a number of knitwear collections (personal and external companies), whilst freelancing and researching for a number of exciting projects. My work revolves around the idea of sustainable fashion from a knitted perspective and the different ways to achieve this incorporating the ideas of slow fashion into mainstream society. I love knitting. And wool. And double sided sticky tape.
