Halifax Spinning Mill samples...

March 20, 2014

I love going to visit Paul at his mill - Halifax Spinning Mill. This time was no different, and hearing the whir (or thunder depending on where you stand!) of the carding machines always makes me envious of the lucky people who are going to get a big batch of new beautifully spun yarn in a few weeks!

This time we were talking about the disengagement of designers from the materials they use - 100% wool is all good and well, but with over 60 different varieties of sheep fleece available within the UK today (BWMB 2010) there is such a wealth of variety not being utilised!

I was lucky enough to be able to go through his sample collection of yarns and was amazed at the variety of blends and versatility of the fibre! So above are a few pictures to wet your appetite!

Jonathon Porritt at MMU, SEEG Lecture.

March 20, 2014

...Jonathon Porritt's most recent book is out now...

Sir Jonathon Porritt is an acclaimed environmentalist and author. He has championed issues as part of the Green Party in England, has numerous books dedicated to the exploration and education of environmental issues, he was director at Friends of the Earth and is an integral part of Forum for the Future.

His most recent book ‘The World we made’ is next on my reading list, so I shall update this account when I have finished reading - if it is anything like his lecture I’m sure it will be engaging and very thought provoking.

Jonathon defines the roles of business and the infrastructure that it is tied to as the ‘means by which we bring forward new thinking’. A transformed and rejuvenated way of doing business that links in the many different sectors that will enable us as a society to progress without devastating the delicate ecosystem around us.

He focused on the governance of social justice and the bio-physical (defined as the biotic and abiotic surroundings of an organism or population, which includes the factors that have an influence in their survival) needs of our world.

Focusing on the triangle of governance that is weaved into our society (Government - business - civil society), which intensifies and complicates the ‘blame’ or ‘change’ factors necessary to facilitate environmental progression. Jonathon highlights the fact that at Rio+20 “Businesses stepped forward”, Businesses have and can shape the way that goods are available and marketed to consumers - UK businesses “exist to generate a surplus”. Is there a battle between the natural world versus the human world? Can we balance meeting our needs with maintaining a vibrant and flourishing ecosystem?

The following statement left a lasting impression on me, that ‘we have lost the connective-ness between knowledge, research and policy making’. There is a void between scientific/progressive research and the policy makers that hold the influence for change.

Over the past ten years the development of new technologies has added a new dimension to sustainability - when you team sustainability with technology we create “do-ability”. In my opinion we need this “do-ability” to engage creators, inventors, designers that are passionate and able to “do” to encourage social, environmental and cultural change, however, technology can only deliver if the right policies are in place (see: triangle of governance).

Connectivity, traceability and transparency were also prominent in Jonathon’s talk. Investigating the disparity between national systems and local city policies highlights the discrepancies between hierarchies.

I found Jonathon’s talk refreshing and insightful, the positive connotations for change made the listener feel empowered not depleted and really opened my eyes and made me begin to think more about the policy makers and changers and how this directly influences my ideas for positive change as a designer.

I am now off to read his book I have just loaned form the library...

WOW Southbank Festival

March 20, 2014

If you didn't get a chance to attend the Women of the World festival at the Southbank Centre a couple of weekends ago, then this film of the segment 'Louboutins and Landfill' should definitely be watched.
It is a fantastic discussion with a great variety of highly skilled practitioners, academics, designers and business women, coming together to discuss the possibilities, necessities and global system changes needed to "Design future visions".

This exciting lecture talks about:

- Exploring ideas of how we might live in the future
- Consumption
- Supply change transparence
- Workers rights
- Materials and material culture
- Globalisation vs Localism

"You have to be prepared to unthink the things you think are just the way it is"

Winter Wonderland Swish...

December 4, 2012
If you're in London, or happen to be heading there this weekend - DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS! It looks amazing...

The team behind Swapaholics UK are organising a clothes Swap next Saturday in Shoreditch, London. It's all about sustainability, upcycling clothes, recycling, and ultimately, having an amazing time...Sounds like the perfect weekend activity to me!

Have a look at whats on offer...

Elie from Swapaholics told us a little more about the story behind Swapaholics:

Who are Swapaholics UK?

SwapAholic UK is a group of four young Londoners obsessed with clothes, fashion and the environment. Founded over a glass of wine, the idea was to have a fun event where people felt they were helping the environment and getting something in return. People buy clothes and wear them once or twice before they end up, abandoned, in a dark corner of the wardrobe. We want to change this! We want to give our planet and the clothes a second chance by hosting clothes swapping.

What is swapping and how does it work?

The idea is that you bring a couple of used items in good condition. For every accepted item you get one token which enables you take one item of your choice from another swapper’s collection.

Our slogan, which says: ‘Swap, don’t Shop’, points to the joy of finding the item of your dreams with a clean conscience. You don’t have to fear your account balance any more. You don’t need to feel bad for buying ‘too many’ clothes, which is ultimately bad for the environment and your wallet!

How is it Christmas time already?

December 4, 2012
WOW...i'm sure time never flew by this fast when we were little! I can't understand how it has become December already! Although now I come to think about all the things I have crammed into this year (and still have to cram in before 2013 eek!) it scares me! So quick quick updates of latest events:

* We have been touring the Chantico collection across Yorkshire - sneak previews have been popping up everywhere before the official launch in 2013 - we have an amazing array of beautiful alpaca knits, machine and hand knitted by the wonderful Yorkshire ladies - its been so exciting to see the collections come together, and I can't wait to be part of it as it grows!

*DUST collective - me and my amazingly talented friend Emma have been squirrelling away working on a brand new exciting project which mixes vintage and second hand clothing with new ethical pieces, under the name DUST collective we have lots of exciting collaborations in the pipeline, and a small collection if what is to come is now available on ASOS!

* I had an amazing time in London over the past few weeks teaching a number of lectures for The Offset Warehouse (if you haven't heard of them before - check them out - they sell fairtrade, organic, second hand, ethical fabrics and haberdashery items online - they are amazing! I was asked to host a couple of sets of lectures over numerous days on the ins and outs of Ethical Fashion and Ethical Knitwear design - it was a great experience, and the students and designers I met were amazing - I can't wait to see how they impact on the fashion industry in the years to come!

* Fairs Fairs Fairs...this is how I have been spending the rest of my time - getting ready for and attending and selling my knitwear accessories and sewing goods across the North West at various vintage fairs and craft fairs - I love interacting with my customers and seeing what they like and don't like about my collections! Its been great fun - if a little chilly at times!

* There have been some exciting commission knits being worked on in the studio (sometimes to very tight deadlines!) but its been great to get to grips with more designers visions and seeing just how far people want to push hand knit is very exciting...pictures up as soon as their collections have hit the runway!

Sneak Peek...

June 26, 2012
So...i've been pretty distant lately - partly because I've been thousands of miles away...but also because i've been busy moving into a new new studio workshop in Manchester and also keeping on top of the wonderful world of alpacas - Chantico! We've had a really busy couple of weeks - with the count down to the launch so close we've been busy with business cards, logos, packaging, photo shoots, quality control etc etc...phew!

So I thought i'd give you all a sneak peek of our new A/W12 colours - fresh from the dyers - and all knitted up in our lovely brand new patterns!

How lovely and timeless are these...

p.s. Here's a quick picture of my (slightly messy!) new studio table! Wait until I move all the wool in!

Textile Institute World Conference 2012

June 7, 2012
I was fortunate enough to win the Textile Institute's Sustainability Award at the 'Design Means Business' exhibition, towards the end of last year - the prize was an amazing trip to Malaysia to attend the Textile Institute's World Conference 2012 held in Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur. It was a great few days with many interesting lectures being held and a great interview with the key-note speaker Jimmy Choo. There was a lovely dinner and awards ceremony where traditional Malaysian dancers took to the stage to entertain us. I then rushed to the airport to meet my two amazing friends Kellie and Lotty, to start our next adventure - Kuala Lumpur - Singapore - Hong Kong - China.

It was an amazing trip - and we managed to cram in so many fantastic trips/visits/places - with the help of my lovely godmother who guided us to China and showed us the most amazing place to buy textiles! I can only begin to list a few of the many things we did - including - visiting the Batu Caves, Petaling Market, Sepang F1 racetrack, fireworks, Seeing fireflies in the mangroves, visiting Malacca, getting the night train to Singapore, A night safari, Orchid gardens and an original Singapore Sling in the Raffles Hotel, night cruise through the harbour. We then flew to Hong Kong, got the train to China, visited Kowloon Park, going on the star ferry to The Island, Stanley beaches, Victoria Peak, Dafen Art Village China, Happy Valley Races, going on a boat to see pink dolphins, Visited Big Budda, the goldfish market, bird market, flower market, ladies market and on the last day - DISNEYLAND HK! Phew -  no wonder we were tired!

I love knitting. And wool. And double sided sticky tape.
